Stop At: Walkabout Tour Pick Up, Taxi stand just outside train station, 50123 Firenze FI, Italy

Check-in and departure point

Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: Borgo Storico di Manarola, Manarola Italy

Built in the valley of the torrente Groppo, until 1950 the stream which runs through the town was completely uncovered and 11 stone bridges allowed the people to cross from one side to the other. Over the next thirty years the stream was gradually covered over.

The ancient village was destroyed by Saracen pirates (in 849) and the surviving people fled in land to live. When the seas were made safe again in the 11th century, people came back to settle here under the protection of the Republic of Genova.

By the 1200's cultivation of vines was not only established but the wine they produced was sought after. The church of San Lorenzo was begun in 1338. The patron saint is celebrated on the 10th of August with a procession through the streets carrying a statue of him.

The castle which protected the town from pirates is now a private home, you can see the garden from the panoramic walk, it is on the rock immediately above the port.

Manarola is now famous for its Christmas nativity scene which is the biggest in the world. Figures outlined in thousands of lights cover the hillside. Also an Easter scene is made.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Borgo Storico di Corniglia, Corniglia Italy

The middle town of the five, Corniglia is the smallest town and sits at 90 metres above sea level.

The name derives from the huge spur of rock on which the village sits. Population of about only 200.

San Pietro church from the fourteenth century on the site of an eleventh century chapel. San Pietro's day is 29th June and as part of the celebrations, there is a procession through the streets. A special savoury tart is prepared with rice, eggs and cheese and is shared among the people who take part in the procession.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Cinque Terre Trails, Riomaggiore to Monterroso Italy

These ancient trails are rough but manageable. Be prepared for the hiking – although the path is open to everyone, remember that the ground can be slippery, uneven, and in places steep and narrow. The charm of the area is that it is natural and unspoiled, do not expect hand rails or safety rails when steps are steep or when the path is close to the cliff edge. Because of the nature of the hike, we are unable to accept small children or anyone with walking difficulties.

Duration: 8 hours

Stop At: 19018 Vernazza Italy

Vernazza is unique in the Cinque Terre because of the small port that was built allowing ships to land in the protected bay. It was already a fortified village and efficient maritime base in the earliest records available from the eleventh century. Today there are traces of the military defences built by the Genovese in the thirteenth century such as traces of the old walls, ramparts and the look out tower.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Borgo Antico, Via Roma, 19016 Monterosso al Mare Italy

There was a castle here before 1200 and some ruins of it can still be seen. The community of Monterosso was founded in 1214.
The church of San Giovanni Battista, built-in 1220 has a bell tower built in 1400 as a lookout tower.
The church of San Antonio di Mesco was built in 1335.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Spiaggia di Fegina, via Fegina, Monterosso al Mare Italy

The new town is called Fegina and is linked to the old part of Monterosso by a pedestrian tunnel. Statue of Neptune built into the rock, but made of concrete so badly deteriorated, was built by an architect in the 1920's.
The sandy shelf provides the ideal habitat for seagrass which acts as a lung for the waters of the Cinque Terre and provides a beautiful beach for us. The whole area is a marine protected area, like the sea version of a national park.
2007 Forbes magazine called Monterosso the sexiest beach in the world....whatever that may mean.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: monterosso railway station, Italy, 19016 Monterosso al Mare SP, Italy

Boat Ride (weather permitting)

Duration: 40 minutes

Stop At: Borgo Storico di Riomaggiore, Riomaggiore Italy

At Riomaggiore, centuries ago, the distinctive tall, colourful houses known as Genovese tower houses arranged in rows connected by alleys, arches and steps provided a defense against pirates.

House colours are regulated by the comune. You can't just paint them any colour you like!

Houses have two entrances, one at the front and one at the rear on the higher road, so that when they were attacked by pirates, the people could escape.

At the end of the eighteen hundreds the railway came along the coast and Riomaggiore, along with the other towns of the cinque terrre came out of their historic isolation, even though a road wouldn't reach them until the 1970's.

Language, lingua ligure, the villages were so cut off even from each other that they spoke different dialects of the same language.

  • 4 0ut of 5 only because we did not do tour so can't rate that. However scenery was gorgeous, the towns picturesque, aquamarine water shimmered and the views from the trail were spectacular!
  • Great trip - long day. Guides Odo and Marco were great and made the trip the best it could be. The group lunch for $15 Euros was perfect!!
  • Great day out with an enjoyable hike in the middle with stunning views. Our guides from Walkabout Tours, Chiara and Marco, were both excellent and knowledgable. Thoroughly recommended but be aware it is a long day including the travel to and from Florence.
  • Ado and Chris were wonderful guides!! Organised, energetic, friendly, knowledgeable and very passionate. They really made the day incredibly special. We were able to see all 5 little towns and the lunch was amazing. I would highly recommend this tour.
  • I highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting to see the beautiful Cinque Terre. The guides were very energetic fun and gave us lots of history. It was well organized. We were able to see all five villages. They also gave the option of taking alternate transportation if you’re not able to walk.
  • The tour guide never showed up! No phone call, no email, no apology! Shameful! If you want to see Cinque Terre, I would recommend going without a tour. Get a day pass before going. Lines are long at Cinque Terre for tickets. Look on the sides of the Villages for walking paths along the water. Those are the best spots to get great photos.
  • Chiara/Kiara and Marco our guides from walkabout tours were super active and friendly and were always there for any questions. The day was packed and their time management helped us to visit all the parts as well as their tips and tricks for the shops and food places. We had time to rest and visit the cities, they are professional and they explained everything, definitely recommended.
  • Good: the guides Alessandro and Alecia were excellent! The scenery stunning. Lunch was wonderful! Bad: The tour is way too rushed to be enjoyable. We did see all 5 villages but at such breakneck speed it was more like doing a half marathon than enjoying the towns. I believe it would be better to see 1 or 2 of the 5 and have more time in each town. If you want to spend time on the beach or meander thru towns this probably isn’t the tour for you. Ugly: the hordes of tourists, myself included, caused literal traffic jams up and down the stairs, of which there are many.,. October is no longer slow season.
  • Great experience, A small company called Walkabout Tours ran our tour. Chris and Ado are great guys with fun personalities and great stories. (Perfect for English speakers) Trip was very well planned and provided a wealth of information. Will recommend to friends. :-)
  • Chris and Audo are rockstars. They are extremely knowledgeable, personable and excellent at communicating and herding cats. While it is a long day and you don’t have much time in each town, it’s a good way to survey the area if you only have one day. Chris and Audo are extremely knowledgeable about the area and the history and are excited to share it. While you can do Cinque Terra by yourself, their expertise and warm personalities makes it well worth having them as local guides.
  • My husband had a knee injury and we were unable to go. I tried calling Viator all day but was unable to get through, when I finally did it was within 24 hours so I was refused a refund! We have booked numerous times with Viator, so I did not expect this. I would appreciate a refund
  • I would give this experience 10 stars if I could. Our tour guide Chris was AMAZING. So knowledgeable, personable, and went out of his way to make sure everyone was comfortable and knew their options at each stop. He was excellent with time management and kept everyone on schedule, which I know can be challenging. This was our favorite day of our vacation and we kept talking about wishing Chris could lead the rest of our vaca! Thank you!
  • Amazing day albeit long. So glad we did the excursion it was breathtakingly beautiful. Be prepared it’s ALOT of walking. We chose to do the hike which was awesome! But even if you dont do the hike be prepared to walk up steps and at a quick pace to keep up. I’d say, be someone who is capable of walking some distance and that you are in good health. Ado the guide is friendly, helpful and knows how to do things in an environment of at times, confusion. He is an expert at what he does, he controls the chaos, looks out for everyone in the group, is Knowledgeable, entertaining and keeps things interesting for sure. It was my birthday and he arranged, at the lunch spot where we got the prefixe meal, for them to surprise me with some cake and they all sang happy birthday to me , so sweet. The lunch was good which included an appetizer and pasta dish. Only cost $15. Served quickly and then you are on your way to continue the sight seeing. Towns are quaint and interesting but the views from the hike were the highlight for me and it was worth the sweat to make it up there . The trails are rocky but just be sure you have decent sneakers on. In the last town get the “Pan Fritte”. It’s like a fluffy crispy dough with a ricotta filling. Light and delicious!!! Also cheap only $2.50 each! The lemon slushy or limoncello drink stop midway up the hike was good also! Dont have too many as the way down ilcan be challenging. The relaxing boat ride ending the day was calming. The bus that takes you to and from was also comfortable and clean. I highly recommend this excursion. You will not regret it.
  • The entire day was most memorable; the views, the hike, the lunch, dipping our toes in the Mediterranean Sea, etc. Our guides Alessandro and Alice were the best - knowledgeable, attentive and fun.
  • First off, the water is stunning and the views, even more so! We took a very nice motor coach bus from Florence and the guides gave us an engaging and historic explanation of the various areas along the way. Once we arrived, there is a train that connects all 5 towns. There is a lot of walking so bring your hiking/walking shoes and water! We did the hiking part of the tour which was challenging and had stunning views. The guides did provide the option to the group to go on the hike or take the train. The lunch in Vernazza was delicious and we dipped our toes in the sea in Montessoro. Our three guides, Ado, Francesca, and Geni were absolutely outstanding! They kept everyone together and on time. 10/10 would recommend!
  • Our tour departed from Florence to the Cinque Terre and was led by Chris who was the most attentive, personable and friendly guide we have ever had. We are so glad that we hiked as well as took the train from village to village. We recommend the hike from Corniglia to Vernazzo which has views that will blow you away(about a 90 minute hike). You miss a lot of you don’t hike this segment of the trail. You need the train as well to be able to see all 5 villages in one day. Our day started in Florence at 7:30 and we returned at 9:00PM. The bus was very nice.
  • Amazing day in Cinque terre. Loved the beautiful sights, the hike was fun and gorgeous. Sad the boat was not available but all else was fantastic. Ginevere was excellent guide- so energetic and warm and knowledgeable and fun!
  • The Cinque Terre areas were beautiful. The guides were knowledgeable and funny. We did the hiking experience, which I do not regret. However, because of the time it takes to hike there was not as much time to explore each town and try their each of their unique foods/wine. The total experience is 14 hours and is quite an exhausting day (0645-2100). The hike itself is not bad, but we also were staying a good distance from the meeting/ending point (the wife and I walked 11 miles that day). I would have given it 5 stars but the lack of time to explore each town was not enough. Overall great experience and would recommend.
  • Chiara and Marco were amazing guides. They were both very knowledge about Cinque Terre. A full day and wish we even had more time. I now know which towns I would like to spend additional time in. One of the highlights of my time in Italy.
  • Our favorite part was : Ado and Chris! The tour guides. Their love of tourism is infectious. So much excitement and knowledge just bursting to be shared. Extremely knowledgeable, approachable, and organized. Highly recommend this tour. It is a full day but they make it fabulous!
  • Our guides Marco and Chiarra were amazing. So enthusiastic and knowledgeable. It was a really long day but a lot was packed into the day. We are 56 and 58, in great shape. We work out an hour a day and live in the Rocky Mountains so we are used to hiking. The hiking between Cornelia and Vernazza was pretty strenuous. I would only recommend it if you have good strong knees. Lots of up and down stairs. Beautiful scenery just make sure you are fit.
  • An amazing day with incredible sights. We were lucky enough to enjoy our day with our two amazing guides, Chiara and Marco. Not only were they extremely funny and interesting, but they went the extra mile with their food and snack suggestions, as well as extra knowledge about Cinque Terre. A pretty packed day, but oh so worth it for the memories that we will keep. Definitely the highlight of our Italy trip so far.
  • Ado and Marco were great guides. Love Ado's personality, energy and conduct of the whole tour. We enjoyed the amazing views and experience. Pretty unfit for the hiking bit, so skipped that. Overall great experience and Ado made it special. Love from Malaysia!
  • Absolutely book this trip!! A fantastic way to see all 5 towns. The hike was amazing and maybe burned off a couple of recent gelatos! Ginny was the most joyful, knowledgeable, organized and engaging guide! Her smile was infectious :)). Highly recommended tour!!
