Stop At: Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, 1-2 Nakajima-cho, Naka-ku, Hiroshima 730-0811 Hiroshima Prefecture

Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park (平和記念公園, Heiwa Kinen Kōen) is one of the most prominent features of the city. Even visitors not looking for it will likely stumble upon the large park of over 120,000 square meters. Its trees, lawns, and walking paths are in stark contrast to the surrounding downtown area.

Before the bomb, the area of what is now the Peace Park was the political and commercial heart of the city. For this reason, it was chosen as the pilot's target. Four years to the day after the bomb was dropped, it was decided that the area would not be redeveloped but instead devoted to peace memorial facilities.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Hiroshima Castle, 21-1 Motomachi, Naka-ku, Hiroshima 730-0011 Hiroshima Prefecture

Hiroshima Castle (広島城, Hiroshimajō), also called the Carp Castle, is a good example of a castle built on a plain in the center of a city as opposed to hilltop and mountaintop castles. Its main keep is five stories tall, and its grounds are surrounded by a moat. Also within the castle's precincts are a shrine, some ruins and a few reconstructed buildings of the Ninomaru (second circle of defense).

Hiroshima developed as a castle town, whereby the castle was both the physical and economical center of the city. Built in 1589 by the powerful feudal lord Mori Terumoto, Hiroshima Castle was an important seat of power in Western Japan. While it was spared the demolishment that many other castles met during the Meiji Restoration, like the rest of the city, Hiroshima Castle was destroyed by the atomic bomb in 1945.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Shukkei-en Garden, 2-11 Kaminobori-cho, Hiroshima Hiroshima Prefecture

Shukkeien is a Japanese garden in Hiroshima, designated as one of Japan’s Top 100 Historical Parks and a National Scenic Spot. This article introduces the highlights of the garden, access information, and other tips to enjoy it.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Itsukushima Shrine, 1-1 Miyajimacho, Hatsukaichi 739-0588 Hiroshima Prefecture

Miyajima (宮島) is a small island less than an hour outside the city of Hiroshima. It is most famous for its giant torii gate, which at high tide seems to float on the water. The sight is ranked as one of Japan's three best views.

While officially named Itsukushima, the island is more commonly referred to as Miyajima, Japanese for "shrine island". This is because the island is so closely related to its key shrine, Itsukushima Shrine, in the public's mind. Like the torii gate, the shrine's main buildings are built over water.

Miyajima is a romantic place, best enjoyed by staying overnight at one of the island's ryokan. While there are usually many day tourists, in the evening the area becomes much quieter and more peaceful. There are also wild deer on the island that have become accustomed to people. In the day the deer wander around the same sites as the tourists, and in the evening they sleep along the walking paths.

  • Yuko was an excellent guide who helped me make the most of the 1 day that I had to explore Hiroshima and Miyajima. We started the day around 9:30 AM by visiting the Peace Memorial Museum, which is a very solemn place to better understand one of the most tragic and sad events in human history. She gave context to a lot of what we saw, providing her family's own perceptions of the events that transpired and the aftermath. The museum will bring you to the verge of tears and I told her I couldn't imagine repeatedly visiting that museum as a tour guide to which she replied that she sees it as a calling to spread knowledge of the events that unfolded in Hiroshima. After the museum, we explored the grounds of the Peace Memorial which somewhat lifted my spirits, as the exhibits in the museum left me feeling very sad. Yuko then took me out for a delicious okonomiyaki lunch where I ordered mine to include oysters since Hiroshima is known for its oysters. We then ventured to Miyajima where she gave me a good overview regarding the history of the island, Shinto & Buddhist beliefs, and had us walk around the island with purpose since she knew where to go to see everything noteworthy on the island. Since we made good time getting around in Miyajima, we also got to visit the grounds of Hiroshima Castle. She explained that it had to rebuilt after the bombing of Hiroshima and took note that I had already seen Osaka Castle, so she suggested that it probably wouldn't be worth my while to pay admission to enter the museum inside the castle. The views around the castle were still very beautiful so I'm happy we got to explore the area around the castle. The experience overall was great and I got along with Yuko very well. I was traveling solo, so she also took some excellent photos for me to capture memories of my time in Japan. She's very personable and knowledgeable so I highly recommend her as a guide. She even went above and beyond by helping me find a place to go out to eat for dinner after the tour was over.
  • Yoshiko was the best tour guide ever! She is the kindest soul, and our group truly feels blessed to have met her. She is extremely knowledgeable, and had answers to all of our questions! We also enjoyed learning more about the Japanese culture from her. Our day with her was the best day of our trip! We hope to see her again in the future as she was just a lovely person to be with all day. I can’t say enough good things. We are so happy to have met her and wish her nothing but the best!
  • Our guide, Pancho, was very thorough showing us around these 2 beautiful cities. It was nice to explorethe cities with ease and not have to worry about making general tourist mistakes , i.e. getting lost, figuring out train/subway lines, etc.. Our family, especially our kids (10 and 15), enjoyed his company very much. Definitely a plus to have a local show us around the Memorial site..without a guide, we would’ve overlooked visiting the basement where the only office worker in the building survived the blast just because he happened to be in the basement at that time. The little details make a huge difference in our experience. We feel so grateful to have this opportunity. To experience the tour with our kids was priceless!
  • Very informative tour with a good mix of culture and history. On time with everything. Very lovely tour guide would recommend!
  • Mr. Shin was a fantastic guide to our packed day of Miyajima and the Hiroshima Peace Park. He was a careful listener and adapted our visit and his explanations to our wishes. Wonderful to hear details. Wonderful to see nature. Wonderful to enjoy the oysters we saw being raised in the strait. Powerful to visit the Peace Park and environs with a local guide. Mr. Shin embodies the hospitality and commitment to Peace that is Hiroshima.
  • Amazing day at Miyajima Island! My tour guide was Ken, very helpful and kind. I would highly recommend this tour.
  • We had a fabulous full day personalized tour of Hiroshima and Miyajima. Shin was a wonderful guide. He explained everything in depth so that we could have a full knowledge of the history of Hiroshima and Miyajima. He took us to have Hiroshima's famous Okonomiyaki for lunch. It was delicious. He even made us 2 origami cranes. That was so thoughtful! He was a wonderful tour guide. I would highly recommend him.
  • We had a wonderful tour of Hiroshima and Miyajima (Itsukushima) with Miyuki, and we were impressed with her ability to tailor the personalized tour around our interests, and her willingness to communicate with us ahead of time via email with several great additional suggestions. She has recorded several very useful short YouTube videos which we watched on the train ride to Miyajima that introduced a variety of topics and information we hadn’t known before. It was a real pleasure to talk with her about all manner of things about Hiroshima history and Japan itself. She told us about and showed us several fascinating things which we never would have found on our own. And we really appreciated that she was able to find a great okonomiyaki restaurant in Miyajima which could take a booking at a convenient time on our tour. We definitely recommend JGA for personalized tours, and in particular we recommend Miyuki Nakashima.
  • We thoroughly enjoyed the tour of Hiroshima and Miyajima island. Our guide, Shin, was simply excellent in all ways. He was kind, professional and extremely knowledgeable about the area and made our experience very special! And he didn't mind taking a gazillion photos of us either! Great tour!
  • Shin explanations and tour where top notch. He is a Japanesse proud of its country and helped us understand in a deep way the background and today Hiroshima city. Great tour, widely recommended. Rene
  • Yuko was our guide and she was fantastic. Speaks English very well (I’m from the USA), very knowledge about the history of Hiroshima and Japan itself but more importantly she was very fun to hang out with! Great person to be around and would recommend this to anyone interested in learning about the atomic bombings.
  • Sachiyo my tour guide was absolutely wonderful. She is a world traveler and was able to explain in depth about EVERYWHERE we went. Even locations that we passed by. Additionally she was extremely accommodating and humored me with some personal accommodations. It was a trip of a life time in Hiroshima. We visited Miyajima with the Itsukushima floating Tori and Shrine. We also checked out Daishoin Temple and were even able to squeeze in the Toyokuni Shrine Five-Story Pagoda and the Senjokaku Pavilion. After that we took a ferry back to Hiroshima and went to the Hiroshima Castle. It was a lovely day! I highly recommend the tour.
  • We booked a tour rather last minute for Hiroshima, and our guide was Pancho. Not knowing what to expect, we went into this kind of blind. Within 10 minutes Pancho put us at ease. He met us at our hotel, and gave us a brief of the days events. Then we started our tour, with lots of walking/exploring all the gems Hiroshima had to offer. We saw and learned so much from him, that when we went back out our hotel that night looking for what to do the next day..places were slim..because Pancho had shown us it all!! He was knowledgeable, patient and very anxious to answer all our questions. If this were a movie it would be the role Pancho was born to play. I read some other reviews on this tour that were less than nice, but Pancho is worth the booking and more! Make sure you read the terms about what you pay for on the tour, and what you don't. We knew going in what to pay for, and Pancho was upfront too. Think of it as your best friend offering you a tour and you're picking up his bill for showing you around. Honestly with the exchange rate it wasn't even concerning. If you book with him you will absolutely enjoy your day in Hiroshima! Can we give this guy 10 stars? PLEASE??
  • Yoshi was the perfect guide, and managed our large family group with ease and grace. She was enthusiastic and eager to both show us and teach us all about Hiroshima and Miyajima. We couldn’t have been in better hands! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and are grateful to Yoshi for the care and attention she showed us. Impactful, memorable day. Thanks again Yoshi, from your new Canadian friends!!
  • Excellent tour I wanted to come to Hiroshima and learn about the history. The tour did not disappoint Yuko, my tour guide was awesome. Very professional, friendly, prepared lots of historical knowledge. Yuko speaks perfect English, also is caring in finding out customers’ expectations. Highly recommend! I got to learn about history in Hiroshima, also really enjoy visiting Meyajima, a very beautiful, relaxing world heritage site. Definitely worth a whole day to visit both Meyajima and Hiroshima
  • We had an amazing experience with Yuko in our tour. My partner and Had a full day trip in Hiroshima. Departed from Kyoto Station at 7:20am and arrived at 9am. There we met with Yuko, and she took us first to Miyajima. We saw the Tori (under repair), the shrine and walked around. Then we had lunch and in the afternoon walked around the Peace Park and went to the Hiroshima Museum. We left at 5pm and arrived at 7pm in Kyoto. Yuko was amazing. She is very knowledgeable, friendly and kind. We were able to learn a ton about not only Hiroshima, but also japanese culture and people. Highly recommend taking a guided tour, otherwise you’ll miss a bunch of context.
  • Kaori and the JGA team made our visit to Hiroshima and Miyajima simply wonderful. We were able to see all these sites in one day. A must visit!
  • My family and I had a wonderful day with Eiji, who was very informative, attentive, and enjoyable to be with. My family and I would highly recommend him.
  • We had a great tour with our guide, Shin. Shin spoke excellent English and was very knowledgeable with the history of Hiroshima. He explained the details of the exhibits at Hiroshima Genbaku Dome and Museum and we definitely learned a lot from him regarding what Hiroshima experienced as a result of the bombing. We also had a great lunch of Hiroshima style okonomiyaki and finished up the tour with a visit to Miyajima island. Shin was very friendly and we appreciated the great tour we had with him. またありがとうございました!!
  • This tour was amazing!! Yuko-san was our guide and she was very knowledgeable, very kind, helpful...I can’t say enough about her. She made this trip memorable. I would definitely recommend this tour. 5 stars to Yuko-san!
  • I’ve been all over the world but this tour was by far the best! We saw so many things and our tour guide was fantastic. I would highly recommend!
  • A wonderful day with my tour guide Yoshiko. We met at the A-Bomb Dome and toured the Peace Park first. A very enlightening experience and Yoshiko’s perspective was both informative and insightful. Then we took a local train and ferry Miyajima island. I did not know very much about Miyajima except for the famous red Tori gate in the sea. There was so much more there than I expected! The shrines were beautiful and the local deer were so friendly. Yoshiko shared touching childhood stories of life on the island and showed me all the best spots along the beach, the forest path, and the winding streets of the village. A truly remarkable day I would highly recommend to anyone.
  • I came to Hiroshima on a mission to get away from Tokyo and Yokohama. I found a sense of peace, serenity, sadness, and humility with the people of Hiroshima. It was my first time being in a city in Western Japan. The people of Hiroshima/Kure are rough but down to earth. Their speech is not as soft as what I am accustomed to in Tokyo or Kanto region. I was happy to hear a lot of interesting accent differences that my guide taught me. My guide Yuko took me to the Atom Bomb museum and Miyajima. We filmed together one of the most intense iphone videos I ever made in a museum. This experience was touching and very powerful. Yuko being from Kure taught me many things in our short interaction. She exhibited to me a different flavor of the Japanese spirit. She is the epitome of a very hardworking, happy go lucky demeanor. I think Hiroshima is a very beautiful city and an example of a Japan that has healed from a difficult past. Miyajima is a big contrast from Hiroshima. It is a very peaceful island and was untouched when the bomb was dropped. Nonetheless it was nice to try some local food and I highly recommend the oysters as they are a delicacy in this prefecture. Thank you Yuko I hope to see you again. またね笑!
  • Yuji provided a perfect personalized tour of Miyajima island for my husband and I. He had Wonderful informative laminated cards full of information on history, culture, expressions, language, and local food that was very useful for us to read on the train to Miyajima island. Once on the island, we visited the main shrine. After, we explored the upper shrines where Yuji explained Shinto and Buddhist beliefs in great detail. There is an underground passage with illuminated buddhas which he led us through while chanting a Buddhist prayer for our families. The experience was transformative and beautiful-something we will always reflect upon. Our trail back to the ferry led us through natural paths with high views of the island and friendly deer. Yuji treated us to playing his wooden flute in a peaceful wooded area on the trail. We then went back to Hiroshima for some out of this world okinomoyaki. Yuji had very detailed information about each place for us to read to select which place we wanted to try. After trying okinomoyaki several times in Tokyo and Osaka, hands down, Hiroshima style wins! We then walked to the A bomb building and several significant spots around memorial peace park. We chose to see the museum on our own, but Yuji gladly understood as the day was getting late. Yuji is very friendly, sincere, and has a local perspective of Hiroshima. He shared his parents’ experience as elementary children feeling the impact from 75 kilometers away. We could easily come back and have a full day tour in Hiroshima again with Yuji. Highly recommend this tour! If we could, we would have Yuji show us around other sites of Japan for several days. A must if you are in Hiroshima. Thank you, Yuji!!!
