Stop At: Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, 1-2 Nakajima-cho, Naka-ku, Hiroshima 730-0811 Hiroshima Prefecture

Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park (平和記念公園, Heiwa Kinen Kōen) is one of the most prominent features of the city. Even visitors not looking for it will likely stumble upon the large park of over 120,000 square meters. Its trees, lawns, and walking paths are in stark contrast to the surrounding downtown area.

Before the bomb, the area of what is now the Peace Park was the political and commercial heart of the city. For this reason, it was chosen as the pilot's target. Four years to the day after the bomb was dropped, it was decided that the area would not be redeveloped but instead devoted to peace memorial facilities.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Hiroshima Castle, 21-1 Motomachi, Naka-ku, Hiroshima 730-0011 Hiroshima Prefecture

Hiroshima Castle (広島城, Hiroshimajō), also called the Carp Castle, is a good example of a castle built on a plain in the center of a city as opposed to hilltop and mountaintop castles. Its main keep is five stories tall, and its grounds are surrounded by a moat. Also within the castle's precincts are a shrine, some ruins and a few reconstructed buildings of the Ninomaru (second circle of defense).

Hiroshima developed as a castle town, whereby the castle was both the physical and economical center of the city. Built in 1589 by the powerful feudal lord Mori Terumoto, Hiroshima Castle was an important seat of power in Western Japan. While it was spared the demolishment that many other castles met during the Meiji Restoration, like the rest of the city, Hiroshima Castle was destroyed by the atomic bomb in 1945.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Shukkei-en Garden, 2-11 Kaminobori-cho, Hiroshima Hiroshima Prefecture

Shukkeien is a Japanese garden in Hiroshima, designated as one of Japan’s Top 100 Historical Parks and a National Scenic Spot. This article introduces the highlights of the garden, access information, and other tips to enjoy it.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Itsukushima Shrine, 1-1 Miyajimacho, Hatsukaichi 739-0588 Hiroshima Prefecture

Miyajima (宮島) is a small island less than an hour outside the city of Hiroshima. It is most famous for its giant torii gate, which at high tide seems to float on the water. The sight is ranked as one of Japan's three best views.

While officially named Itsukushima, the island is more commonly referred to as Miyajima, Japanese for "shrine island". This is because the island is so closely related to its key shrine, Itsukushima Shrine, in the public's mind. Like the torii gate, the shrine's main buildings are built over water.

Miyajima is a romantic place, best enjoyed by staying overnight at one of the island's ryokan. While there are usually many day tourists, in the evening the area becomes much quieter and more peaceful. There are also wild deer on the island that have become accustomed to people. In the day the deer wander around the same sites as the tourists, and in the evening they sleep along the walking paths.

  • We had a great tour with our guide, Shin. Shin spoke excellent English and was very knowledgeable with the history of Hiroshima. He explained the details of the exhibits at Hiroshima Genbaku Dome and Museum and we definitely learned a lot from him regarding what Hiroshima experienced as a result of the bombing. We also had a great lunch of Hiroshima style okonomiyaki and finished up the tour with a visit to Miyajima island. Shin was very friendly and we appreciated the great tour we had with him. またありがとうございました!!
  • This tour was amazing!! Yuko-san was our guide and she was very knowledgeable, very kind, helpful...I can’t say enough about her. She made this trip memorable. I would definitely recommend this tour. 5 stars to Yuko-san!
  • I’ve been all over the world but this tour was by far the best! We saw so many things and our tour guide was fantastic. I would highly recommend!
  • A wonderful day with my tour guide Yoshiko. We met at the A-Bomb Dome and toured the Peace Park first. A very enlightening experience and Yoshiko’s perspective was both informative and insightful. Then we took a local train and ferry Miyajima island. I did not know very much about Miyajima except for the famous red Tori gate in the sea. There was so much more there than I expected! The shrines were beautiful and the local deer were so friendly. Yoshiko shared touching childhood stories of life on the island and showed me all the best spots along the beach, the forest path, and the winding streets of the village. A truly remarkable day I would highly recommend to anyone.
  • I came to Hiroshima on a mission to get away from Tokyo and Yokohama. I found a sense of peace, serenity, sadness, and humility with the people of Hiroshima. It was my first time being in a city in Western Japan. The people of Hiroshima/Kure are rough but down to earth. Their speech is not as soft as what I am accustomed to in Tokyo or Kanto region. I was happy to hear a lot of interesting accent differences that my guide taught me. My guide Yuko took me to the Atom Bomb museum and Miyajima. We filmed together one of the most intense iphone videos I ever made in a museum. This experience was touching and very powerful. Yuko being from Kure taught me many things in our short interaction. She exhibited to me a different flavor of the Japanese spirit. She is the epitome of a very hardworking, happy go lucky demeanor. I think Hiroshima is a very beautiful city and an example of a Japan that has healed from a difficult past. Miyajima is a big contrast from Hiroshima. It is a very peaceful island and was untouched when the bomb was dropped. Nonetheless it was nice to try some local food and I highly recommend the oysters as they are a delicacy in this prefecture. Thank you Yuko I hope to see you again. またね笑!
  • Yuji provided a perfect personalized tour of Miyajima island for my husband and I. He had Wonderful informative laminated cards full of information on history, culture, expressions, language, and local food that was very useful for us to read on the train to Miyajima island. Once on the island, we visited the main shrine. After, we explored the upper shrines where Yuji explained Shinto and Buddhist beliefs in great detail. There is an underground passage with illuminated buddhas which he led us through while chanting a Buddhist prayer for our families. The experience was transformative and beautiful-something we will always reflect upon. Our trail back to the ferry led us through natural paths with high views of the island and friendly deer. Yuji treated us to playing his wooden flute in a peaceful wooded area on the trail. We then went back to Hiroshima for some out of this world okinomoyaki. Yuji had very detailed information about each place for us to read to select which place we wanted to try. After trying okinomoyaki several times in Tokyo and Osaka, hands down, Hiroshima style wins! We then walked to the A bomb building and several significant spots around memorial peace park. We chose to see the museum on our own, but Yuji gladly understood as the day was getting late. Yuji is very friendly, sincere, and has a local perspective of Hiroshima. He shared his parents’ experience as elementary children feeling the impact from 75 kilometers away. We could easily come back and have a full day tour in Hiroshima again with Yuji. Highly recommend this tour! If we could, we would have Yuji show us around other sites of Japan for several days. A must if you are in Hiroshima. Thank you, Yuji!!!
  • Yuko was amazing from start to finish! She arrived on time and was so patient with me all day! I take a lot of pictures, but never felt rushed...even with it being a little cold outside. We toured the Peace Museum and went to Miyajima Island. We traveled by train, tram and bus. It was an eventful day so be prepared to be engaged and moving. The museum was very moving. The Island was beautiful and would be a great visit for couples! Will definitely return to Hiroshima hands down! Thank you Yuko!
  • Kaori was a fantastic guide - we enjoyed the tour very much! She gave us a lot of context as we walked around Hiroshima, as well as her family story of the atomic bombing. It was a moving experience. We then enjoyed a more lighthearted trip to Miyajima, complete with lunch and lots of exploring. Kaori was very kind and knew so much about the area - we highly recommend her to anyone traveling to Hiroshima!
  • It was a very nice tour and fun day. Noriko was very informative and fun to be around. She is super kind and caring and shared a lot of information as we were walk through the areas. She answered any questions we had as well. :)
  • My husband and I had a wonderful day with our guide Keiko Tanaka! Despite the closures of Peace Memorial museum, Hiroshima castle and Shukkei-en garden due to covid-19, Keiko-san made sure our trip was a memorable one. She was kind to share the story about her father surviving the bombing. We were glad to have such a knowledgeable, professional and easy to talk with guide. In Miyajima we not only visited the Itsukushima shrine, but also had a scenic cable car ride up to the top of Mount Misen. However, we did not get a chance to see the O-Torii gate in it's full glorious view, as it was covered for a restoration. To sum it up, we were so inspired with the city and it's people, the tour and the stories that promised ourselves to return to Hiroshima during a warmer season some day once everything is open again :) Highly recommend this tour and our guide Keiko-san!
  • We had a very good day well spent with Tom.He was very informative and we would reccomend his personalized tour to anybody.
  • My son and I had a very memorable tour of Hiroshima with Yuko. She was easy to talk with and well organized. Her experience as a teacher shown through in her knowledge of the places we visited and the interest she showed in us as people and travelers. Every American, every lover of peace, needs to visit this place and understand what happened here. There is no way that words can describe what you will see and feel when you are here. Yuko helped make that come alive for us. Many thanks.
  • Despite the restrictions from Corona virus precautions (peace memorial museum was closed) we had a wonderful tour thanks to the vibrant pleasant guide Yuko. Very organized and informative. Best of the three tours we have booked via Tripadvisor on this Japan trip.
  • We had a wonderful tour of Hiroshima & Miyajima especially with the help of our tour guide Mami Mukai. She’s very knowledgeable, accommodating and patient with us, two slow old people.
  • I visited Hiroshima with my husband (54) and daughter (25). We were accompanied by an amazing tour guide (Tom). What a beautiful city filled with sad history but beautiful, warm and resilient people. Tom provided amazing story telling and historical information about what happened when the bomb dropped and how the town rebuilt and overcame this horrible circumstance. Tom showed us many beautiful locations i.e. the Peace Memorial, the museum and the Shukkei-en Garden to mention a few. Tom filled our day with knowledge and memories to last a life time. Thank you Trip Advisor and Tom for an incredible experience.
  • Very knowledgeable and friendly guide. There were however unexpected costs that we had to cover that was not mentioned.
  • Tour guide was very demonstrated personal knowledge of the area and great insight in the topic of the tour. Would highly recommend!
  • Tom was professional, patient, kind and clear about his huge knowledge on the topic. Recommendable!!
  • Eini San is an excellent guide. He took care of all our personal needs and explained every sightseeing place with very minute details. He knew about the full history of every place extremely well. Would recommend him to all our friends visiting Hiroshima in near future.
  • Visiting quiet Hiroshima was an unforgettable and moving experience for me and my husband, thanks to our very able guide, Tom-san, who takes his history seriously and touched us with his love for this dignified city and what it has endured. A short side trip to Miyajima showed us a quaint beauty that was magical even on a rainy day. We ended the day at the A-Bomb museum, capping a well spent day full of insightful conversation and memories we will never forget.
  • Our tour guide, Tom, was great! On time to meet us with a great schedule for the day's events. Kept us on track despite crowds and lines. He had lots of relevant information coupled with some good stories. If you are considering visiting these sites, do yourself a favor and get a qualified tour guide!
  • this tour was a highlight of my trip to Japan. I knew that I needed to see Hiroshima and learn more about the history of the city and Yuko was the perfect guide for my trip. She was knowledgable and patient with my questions. Her love for the city and her passion to share the complicated story and its historical importance made the experience more meaningful for me. Can't recommend this enough. Request Yuko, if she is available!
  • Thanks to Eijiro Kurisaka for an enjoyable and informative tour of the key highlights of Hiroshima on Sunday 29 Dec 2019. Eijiro was very prompt with pre-tour communication, has a good handle on English, and managed to navigate any queues on the tour with ease. I appreciated that he was able to readily tailor the private tour to suit my preferences. He is a great guide. Anyone who scores Eijiro for this walking tour is in for a treat.
  • We had a great time with Tom who is very tentative, caring guide. Thank you Tom. Will definitely recommend this tour and Tom particularly to my friends and families when they visit Japan.
