  • We organized a bespoke 2 night/ 3 day birding tour with Roof of Africa from Durban to Underberg and up the Sani Pass into lesotho. Firstly, let me just say it was excellent: spectacular in terms of birding and landscapes. From the get go, Emile was extremely prompt and helpful in his replies and in planning out our perfect trip, which went through a few versions before finding the right itinerary. Our guide, Dr. Aldo Berruti, was one of the best guides we have ever had, with matchless knowledge not only about the birds and nature, but about all the geology and history of this stunning and fascinating region. He was also excellent company. We really had a fantastic time, seeing all the high altitude bird specials such as Drakensberg Rockjumper and Drakensberg Siskin, Ground Woodpecker, Mountain Pipit, and Lammergeier, as well as several unique mammal species such as Sloggett's Ice Rat and Grey Rhebuck. We also had fantastic birding on the way to and around Underberg, seeing the endangered blue swallow, as well as all thee species of Southern African cranes. Plus, the scenery throughout our tour was just unbelievable. Roof of Africa Tours is extremely professional and accommodating and I would highly recommend them for whatever tour you have in mind. The lodging and food was all lovely and Emile even went out of his way while driving back to Durban to stop in Mtunzini to look for Mangrove Kingfisher. What a fantastic tour!
  • Peter showed us many birds, flowers. He also explained a lot of the way of life of Basotho in a village. Beautiful views.
  • This was one of the top adventures I did while visiting South Africa. Highly recommend! Our tour guide was fun and informational. We learned so much about the area, landscape and culture. It was a trip to remember. Our guide even packed a diet friendly picnic lunch for us. Very kind! Being a smaller company these guys really give it all. Can't recommend enough.
  • From the moment we were picked up, we had a great day travelling up the Sani Pass into Lesotho with our guide Tsebo. He was very organised, informative & very funny and let the day flow at a nice pace and nothing was too much of a problem. The trip itself was excellent as we steadily drove up the Sani Pass until we finally reached Lesotho. We were shown various wildlife en route & took the village option which was very interesting. We then stopped off for a picnic with outstanding views all around and the day was capped off with a drink at the highest pub in Africa !
  • What an excellent day trip to Lesotho and trip up the Sani Pass. Our guide/driver Sthem was excellent - a good sense of humour and told us the info we needed rather than too much. Also a safe driver. Great way to see a little part of Lesotho. Great picnic lunch with an amazing view - so much better than sitting in a Cafe or restaurant. Make sure you book the longer tour.
  • We did the full day immersive Tour and had a super interesting and beautiful day with Peter. He shared many interesting bits about the people, animals and landscape. We were really taken care of very well.
  • Simply no better way to do this trip than with Roof of Africa Tours. Peter, our guide was so insightful and he enriched our experience. He mastered the gruelling drive up that incredibly tricky pass with care and attention. Peter participated in the experience at the Village ... he was like a 4D history book. Absolutely loved it. Thank you Roof if Africa and especially Peter, our guide. Comfy vehicle, great price, and well worth it. Top Service. 100 Stars!!
  • Mondli was our tour guide and what a knowledgeable and fantastic guide. We will definitely request him (if we can) the next time we do the trip. He went out of his way to make it comfortable, enjoyable and we learnt so much about the area. The vehicles are well cared for and clean. We've done this trip with another operator before, but will absolutely book with Roof of Africa Tours going forward. After all, this is not a trip you only do once.
  • What an excellent tour! Our tour guide, Peter, is an exceptional driver and very knowledgeable! We were so excited to see the snow on top of the Maluti Mountains. We were able to enjoy the trip to the highest point in Lesotho as well as see the small Lesotho Village. We learnt a lot about the Basotho people and they even made us bread in their hut. Everything was just perfect! Magnificent views. A very well organized tour through emails and WhatsApp, Emile always answered my questions quickly as well as organizing a pickup from our B&B. The best tour we could have done!
  • I joined the Sani Pass tour with my wife and her parents. It was an amazing experience that I recommend to anyone who enjoys the stunning beauty that nature has to offer. The booking process and communication with Roof of Africa was efficient, and all our questions before the tour were answered speedily. COVID protocols were, especially at the Lesotho border, were explained to us as well. Our guide/driver was absolutely helpful from the get-go - he explained what the tour would entail, stopped along the route at scenic & historical spots, and related interesting trivia. Because I mentioned that I'm an amateur birder, he even stopped to point out some of the special birds in the area even though this wasn't a birding tour, which I thought was a nice touch. In all, a professional tour company, one which I can only recommend. I will definitely be looking to do other tours with Roof of Africa tours
  • our guide was Sandile. What a knowledgeable young man with passion for what he does, thank you the trip was amazing and i will do it again!
  • We did the Sani Pass day tour via Roof of Africa Tours on 3 Oct 2021. What an experience! It is worth the money. Peter our guide was very knowledgable and professional! Mountains are beautiful and the snow was a first time! Thank you for great service!!
  • Sandile Mzolo our tour guide was absolutely exceptional, friendly professional and full of local knowledge which made our experience that much more enjoyable. .A well organized tour up Sani pass. I'm so glad I chose Roof of Africa Tours.
  • What a fantastic experience; we loved every single moment of it Peter, our guide was fantastic and so knowledgeable, it was a treat to have him as our guide. He made our border crossings so easy and he was exceptionally friendly and helpful. We are all so happy that we decided to rather take a tour than drive ourselves because things we would have driven straight passed he stopped at and told us about. I promise that this tour is well worth every single cent, its a must do.
  • Great day, so we’ll looked after. Peter our driver was fantastic, very patient for the numerous stops we wanted, and very knowledgeable
  • The tour was such a exceptional experience. Bucket list item for sure! Peter our driver and guide was wonderful, polite, friendly, knowledgeable and made our ride up the pass really pleasurable, his driving skills are outstanding as well! I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a tour up Sani Pass. The snow was really the cherry on top and made it a day that we will remember for a long time to come. Thank you, Peter and Neil at Roof of Africa Tours for a lovely day.
  • This was an amazingly beautiful experience and we would highly recommend it to anyone. Peter, our driver and guide, was exceptionally knowledgeable, professional, helpful and flexible. He was also an outstanding driver. Emile helped us with the booking and he was very responsive and helpful with understanding the border crossing details both in and out of Lesotho.
  • Great Day with our guide Aldo very knowledgeable and full of fun facts. WE had great weather and views are spectacular!
  • Had a great trip up the pass with our Guide Sindile. Everything was well organized and our Guide was very helpful.
  • An excellent day from beginning to end. Our guide/driver was so knowledgeable. and shared our love of birds. His driving was extremely good especially considering the rough terrain. It was a pleasure to be with him all day.
  • We really lucked out on this trip for two reasons. First of all the weather - we saw a few fluffy clouds on the way up but that was it! When we got to the top it was wall to wall sunshine! Secondly - our choice of tour operator. Roof of Africa tours were excellent throughout. Our driver was Emille who was very safe and very knowledgable, we were entertained and educated. We weren't expecting to be visiting a Lesotho village at the top but that is what happened - dressing up and everything! (home cooked bread highly recommend. Home made beer not so much!). Probably the highlight of our month in South Africa although the safari in Hluhluwe Game Reserve comes VERY close.
  • Completely blown away by our amazing sani pass tour with Amal. I did quite a bit of research before deciding to do a tour and not venture ourselves. I'm so glad we did, you absolutely need a strong 4x4 to drive this road, but more over, you need an experienced driver. The best part of this tour is not even the exhilarating bumpy ride, but is how much information we learned from our guide. You simply don't know what you don't know, and we learned so much from him. Don't be fooled by other Google reviews of this pass, it's is no where near close to being tarred. It's quite the rough ride, and we were so pleased to do this tour in a small intimate group with a great tour guide! It shouldn't be missed if you're passing through this area for a few days.
  • Amazing tour to Lesotho via the Sani Pass! My wife and I took this tour in February 2020. We were not disappointed! Great and informative tour guide which taught us about Lesotho and nearby wild life. The tour has stops at a local Lesotho village and the highest pub in Africa for lunch. A great day trip. For those reading other reviews that people should hurry up as the road is getting tarred — do not fret. It will take many many years to fully pave the pass and as of February 2020 very little was done at all. The pass is still extremely off-road and requires an expert driver and top quality car. Do not miss this tour while in Underberg!
  • Roof of Africa were incredibly efficient and well run. We had to change dates and even times just before our trip, and nothing was too much for them to accommodate. The vehicles were immaculate and both of our drivers were phenomenal. At no point did we feel unsafe or at risk in anyway. If you enjoy birding, it's worth asking for Aldo as his knowledge was outstanding and he really made an effort to find special and rare birds along the way. Thanks to all
