Fethiye is a municipality and district of Muğla Province, Turkey. Its area is 875 km2, and its population is 177,702 (2022). It is one of the prominent tourist destinations in the Turkish Riviera. It was formerly known as Makri, and Meğri.

   A sheltered blue lagoon and pebble beach south of Fethiye, backed by pine-covered mountains. The protected lagoon has calm water that is good for swimming; arrive early in summer, when the beach fills with day-trippers.

   A tall mountain rising above Ölüdeniz that is one of the world's top tandem paragliding spots. Book a flight with a licensed operator, or ride the cable car up just for the views over the lagoon.

   A narrow, steep-sided valley ending at a secluded beach, reached mainly by boat from Ölüdeniz. Butterflies are most numerous in early summer; the cliff path down is dangerous, so take the boat instead.

   A hillside ghost town of hundreds of roofless stone houses, abandoned by its Greek residents in the 1920s population exchange. Wander up to the old churches for views, and wear good shoes for the rocky lanes.

   A deep, narrow gorge where you wade through cold, fast water between towering limestone walls. Bring water shoes or rent a pair at the entrance, and expect the first stretch of the river to be knee-deep.

   A Lycian rock tomb carved into the cliff above Fethiye to look like the front of an Ionic temple. Climb the steps in the late afternoon, when the light warms the facade and the harbor below.

   The ruins of the ancient Lycian capital, with a Roman theater and tall pillar tombs, about an hour's drive from Fethiye. Combine it with nearby Letoon, the region's main sanctuary, since the two share a UNESCO listing.

   An ancient Lycian hilltop city with rock tombs, a stadium and a theater facing the mountains. It is an easy stop on the way to Saklıkent; bring a hat, since there is very little shade.

Getting around Fethiye

Dolmuş minibuses run throughout town; routes you might use are west to Karagözler, north to Çalış, and south to Ölüdeniz. They run frequently until around 23:00. Any later will probably involve a taxi, check the price before getting in. They are run by Muttaş and can be found on Moovit
