Located at the northwest tip of the plain of Thessaly, Meteora today has become one of the most popular destinations of mainland Greece. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an archeological site and an officially declared holy place! At the foothills of the rocks, there are 2 settlements, the town of Kalabaka and the village of Kastraki.

Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Great Meteoron Monastery, Eparhiacos dromos Meteoron, Kalambaka 42200 Greece

The Great Meteoron Monastery is the biggest and oldest one of all. It was called the monastery that was “suspended in the air” (meteoro), because of the formation of the gigantic rock on top of which it was built.

The Great Meteoro Monastery was founded by Saint Athanasios the Meteorite who was the first founder of the monastery and the organizer of the systematic koenovion. For this reason, the foundation of this monastery is considered to be a turning point, or even better, the beginning of the organized monastisicm in Holy Meteora. Hosios Athanasios was born around 1302 in the medieval town of New Patras, today’s Hypati and his lay name was Andronikos.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Ypapanti old monastery, Meteoron, Kalampaka 422 00, Greece

Fully constructed inside a large cavity of a rock, this monastery is very indicative of its kind, compared to the ones that are usually seen on the peaks of rocks. A monk under the name of Nilos, in the year 1367 AD, along with another monk named Cyprianus became the founders and the owners of the monastery. It was destroyed in 1809, when the local rebel and hero Papathymios Vlahavas was arrested here by the Turkish army of Ali Pasha. The pathway to this monastery is a very simple and pleasant one.

Duration: 30 minutes

Pass By: Varlaam Monastery, Kalambaka Greece

he Holy Monastery of Varlaam is the second biggest monastery. It is located opposite of the Great Meteoro Monastery and it was founded in the mid 14th century by the exercitant Hosios Varlaam.

The elegant monastery Catholicon was built in the honour of Agioi Pantes in 1541-42, by two brothers from Ioannina, the priest-monks Hosioi Theophanes and Nectarios the Apsarades. The main church was decorated in 1548. Based on stylistic criteria, this magnificent wall-painting is attributed to the famous hagiographer from Thebes, Frago Catelano.

Pass By: Agios Nikolaos Anapaphsas, Kalambaka Greece

The Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas of Anapafsas is the first Monastery that we encounter on our way to the Holy Meteora and was founded at the end of the 14th century.

For the name Anapafsas there are numerous interpretations two of which are the most popular. The first one is that the name Anapafsas was attributed by one of the monastery’s benefactors, while the second explanation has to do with the monastery’s position being the first to be encountered on the way up and probably served to the pilgrims and other visitors as a resting place before continuing on.

  • Everything about the tour was amazing. The guide was super knowledgeable and helpful. The trails chosen were just the perfect type i.e. not too difficult but not so easy that you can't call it a hike. 10/10, would recommend
  • We had a great experience on this tour. It was supposed to be a hiking tour but got switched to a bus tour because of bad weather. Had it not been for the rain, we wouldn’t of been able to see all the great monasteries we saw. I’d highly recommend a bus tour, specifically this one. Both the driver the tour guides were very knowledgeable and nice.
  • We had a wonderful tour with Chris. It was really nice to hike to Meteora and we heard a lot about the hostory, nature en life in general from CHris. Speed was good en enough time to visit one of the monastries. We thought (all 5 of us) that this is much better way to visit than being driven around with a bus...
  • Great hike with amazing views. Our guide Evan was very good. He took the time to explain the sights we were passing by, pointed out good spots for pictures & introduced us to local flora & fauna
  • great hike with some great sights and views. feels great to walk around the mountains of meteora and learn about the history of the place with a great tour guide.
  • Perfect way to explore the natural environment and tour the monastery. The guide provided a great deal of information and made sure everyone was comfortable during the hike.
  • The route through the forest up to the monasteries was quite roundabout, but interesting to see more than just the monasteries and the default path I walked up on my own the day before! No section of the hike was too strenuous or difficult. Chris the guide knew so much about nature and chatted about Greece and history and rock climbing and engaged with everyone in the group on the way. Beautiful views and great way to see and learn about the area. Would recommend!
  • Great half-day hiking tour with Evan, a knowledgeable and attentive guide. Highly recommended. Wear a good hoking shoes.
  • This 4 hour hike provided a comprehensive overview of the area. Very knowledgeable and friendly guide.
  • Great hike through the forest with superb views of Meteora and the monasteries. Chris our guide was very informative and gave us lots of information on the area, history and nature. We also learned quite a bit about rock climbing! A really enjoyable and interesting trip which I would definitely recommend if you enjoy walking.
  • This was a Great experience! The hike was doable for a 40something woman with knee injuries. The Guide was AMAZING!!! So incredibly knowledgeable and very personable with everyone. The views we had on the hike were astounding!! I would absolutely recommend this tour to everyone I know
  • We loved the hike - great experience for us and the kids, from wild tortoises, through blackberries and scrambling up to the church to touching the bell and viewing the landscape from the top of the rock. Our guide - Chris - was a great, knowledgeable person for chatting about the region, hermits, mountains, climbing and anything else, had enough patience to bear full 4h with our 8-years old daughter :) and did not get heart attack when our son was scrambling boulders.
  • Beautiful way to see the surrounding space of the mountains. Our guide was very knowledgeable of history, facts, and the plant life.
  • The hike was wonderful - without big crowds and with a lot of interesting information on the area, the history and nature. Even though the day was hot - most of the time we were in the shade. Evan, the guide was great and very professional. One thing we would add, is some explanations inside the Monastery (but we heard explanations of one of many other another guides there, so not really a problem).
  • Our tour guide Evan was awesome! This was a great hike to see the monasteries. It was warm out along the way but could easily find shaded places to stop and Evan would have good information about the area.
  • Our tour guide, Chris, was knowledgeable of the geology, flora and fauna of the area. He was friendly, kind and helpful during the hike.
  • This is the best way to see Meteora…period. Kostas was a great guide. Nice, informative, helpful. And it’s a beautiful hike up to the monasteries. You just gotta do it.
  • We had an amazing hike with Kostas. The group was small and the experience was intimate. We learned about the local landscape, the history, and got to explore present day at the monasteries. Would highly recommend a tour with Meteora. It was first class!
  • Our local guide was knowledgeable, passionate and entertaining. This tour was a great way to explore the area, learn the history of the region and get some exercise. The hike was about 5.5 miles and 1300 ft elevation gain so good shoes are recommended. It makes a loop so there are new things to see around every corner, including the monasteries of course. The guide knew all the hotspots for great photographs and was generous with taking pictures as well. The company, Visit Meteora was friendly, quick to respond and well organized. The entire experience definitely exceeded my expectations!
  • We stayed at the Doupinani House and woke up with the sun. The sunrise was beautiful over the valley. Our guide arrived and we boarded the van to go to the start of the trail. We ascended for a bit and then received a lesson on the history of the area while looking at caves and structures that were used by early hermits and monks. We ascended higher and saw our first monastery, then hiked on for a view of the valley. Having our guide with us was good for learning about the area. He was also versed on plant life, this was an added bonus! We walked on to the monasteries and unfortunately, we had to be back in Athens so we did not go inside. Franky, the views are the best part of this hike. The weather was perfect. The hike down was gorgeous. It is easily a 9:00 - 14:00 deal. Having a guide makes it better!
  • Kristos was an amazing guide. Very knowledgeable and friendly. Lots of fun. Great scenery. Thanks much.
  • Absolutely beautiful sites, and Chris was amazingly knowledgeable and fun. This was a perfect way to find the best views of Meteora not knowing the area. Hike wasn't too difficult but wear decent shoes. Highly recommend this tour!
  • This tour was amazing. Office is conveniently located in the center of kalambaka with a quick bus ride to where the hike begins. Saw many monasteries along the way including Ypapanti monastery. The day we went was HOT (94 degrees) so make sure you bring lots of water and comfortable shoes! Believe we did nearly 20,000 steps some of which had a good steady incline but no true scrambling or rock climbing so good for all ages!
  • My clients and I found the private hiking tour with Lambros AMAZING ! Everybody loved it, the landscapes, explanations, Lambros was perfect, very attentive, had great knowledge of plants, culture, history, it was very much appreciated.
