Pass By: Meteora, Kastraki, Kalambaka 422 00 Greece

Meteora is an area that covers few square kilometers, where an ancient monastic community and a rare geological phenomenon of huge rock pillars coexist in absolute harmony. Located at the northwest tip of the plain of Thessaly, Meteora today has become one of the most popular destinations of mainland Greece. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an archeological site and an officially declared holy place! At the foothills of the rocks, there are 2 settlements, the town of Kalabaka and the village of Kastraki.

Stop At: Meteora, Kastraki, Kalambaka 422 00 Greece

Hike through the majestic 'rock forest' of Meteora, see the best monasteries and experience the most captivating views on this morning tour. The Meteora Hiking Tour is one of the best ways to enjoy this unique geological phenomenon and to learn the history of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. By joining this morning hike you will walk through hidden trails that only locals know. Let us take you on a journey back in time following the footsteps of the first monks who arrived here more than 15 centuries ago. Join this amazing guided hiking tour and walk among the gigantic rock pillars of Meteora to enjoy truly breathtaking views.

Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Great Meteoron Monastery, Eparhiacos dromos Meteoron, Kalambaka 42200 Greece

The Great Meteoron Monastery is the biggest and oldest one of all. It was called the monastery that was “suspended in the air” (meteoro), because of the formation of the gigantic rock on top of which it was built.

The Great Meteoro Monastery was founded by Saint Athanasios the Meteorite who was the first founder of the monastery and the organizer of the systematic koenovion. For this reason, the foundation of this monastery is considered to be a turning point, or even better, the beginning of the organized monastisicm in Holy Meteora. Hosios Athanasios was born around 1302 in the medieval town of New Patras, today’s Hypati and his lay name was Andronikos.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Ypapanti old monastery, Meteoron, Kalampaka 422 00, Greece

Fully constructed inside a large cavity of a rock, this monastery is very indicative of its kind, compared to the ones that are usually seen on the peaks of rocks. A monk under the name of Nilos, in the year 1367 AD, along with another monk named Cyprianus became the founders and the owners of the monastery. It was destroyed in 1809, when the local rebel and hero Papathymios Vlahavas was arrested here by the Turkish army of Ali Pasha. The pathway to this monastery is a very simple and pleasant one.

Duration: 30 minutes

Pass By: Varlaam Monastery, Kalambaka Greece

he Holy Monastery of Varlaam is the second biggest monastery. It is located opposite of the Great Meteoro Monastery and it was founded in the mid 14th century by the exercitant Hosios Varlaam.

The elegant monastery Catholicon was built in the honour of Agioi Pantes in 1541-42, by two brothers from Ioannina, the priest-monks Hosioi Theophanes and Nectarios the Apsarades. The main church was decorated in 1548. Based on stylistic criteria, this magnificent wall-painting is attributed to the famous hagiographer from Thebes, Frago Catelano.

Pass By: Agios Nikolaos Anapaphsas, Kalambaka Greece

The Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas of Anapafsas is the first Monastery that we encounter on our way to the Holy Meteora and was founded at the end of the 14th century.

For the name Anapafsas there are numerous interpretations two of which are the most popular. The first one is that the name Anapafsas was attributed by one of the monastery’s benefactors, while the second explanation has to do with the monastery’s position being the first to be encountered on the way up and probably served to the pilgrims and other visitors as a resting place before continuing on.

  • I highly recommend this hiking tour as a way to experience the phenomenal setting of the Meteora in an outside-the-tour-bus fashion. Our 4 1/2 hour hike took us through a peaceful oak forest and through wooded trails, all peppered with fantastic views of the monasteries. After a couple of hours of gradual uphill climb, we had about an hour to spend at The Great Meteoron, and the hike was all downhill after that point. Our guide, Evan, was very knowledgeable and friendly, and kept a steady pace that was perfect for our group of 7.
  • On time pick up, comfortable coach, knowledgable and friendly guide (Ivan), easy hike with stops to explain rocks and the significance. I took the sunset tour the same evening and it paled in comparison to the hike.
  • We had a super great hiking tour with our tour guide Chris. He knows everything about the area…history ,plants in this area etc. You will have a stunning view and get also the chance to visit one monastery.
  • This hiking tour is one of the best experiences me and my family had in life! Meteora is by itself a magical place, but visiting it this way makes it really unforgettable! After 5 hours of hiking through forests and incredible spots, my children were sad when we finished the tour. The previous day we took also the sunset tour which was really great too as they are not overlapping and I must say that both guides were amazingly interesting and nice! I am looking forward to doing that again!
  • The tour was very entertaining and, thanks to the extensive botanical and historical knowledge of our guide, also very informative.
  • Such a wonderful hiking. We saw a lot and it was so nice to walk. Nature was beautiful and Meteora so amazing. We also visited Grand Meteora Monastery. We hat plenty of time for the visit and tje walking space was good for everyone. Thank you so much
  • We were collected from our accommodation at 08.30 and joined a group of 4 others which made us a small group of 8 people. Our guide, Jim, took us through the beautiful countryside at a steady pace and gave us a tremendous amount of information about the local area, history, flora, fauna and personal anecdotes. The scenery was wonderful and made all the better for gaining an understanding of the area courtesy of Jim. We took in Great Meteora monastery before a gentle descent back into the valley. The tour concluded at around 13.30 just in time for lunch in the village of Kastraki This tour was the highlight of our visit to the area and we would have missed out on so much had we not done it.
  • Pick up from hotel in Kastraki and our guide Chris was just fantastic from the start, he introduced the small group to each other and displayed a real interest in everyone. We were a mix of French, Spanish and British and we soon had a great vibe as we hiked around Meteora. Chris displayed real passion for the area and was very knowledgeable on the history, culture and natural wildlife, we had a great time and a very memorable few hours, highly recommended
  • good, but the ticket did not correspond to what happened. the ticket said that we were going to have snacks and that we were going to Visit to the hidden monastery of Ypapanti. None of this happened.
  • Meteora morning Hiking tour- Highly recommend this moderately challenging hike, as an excellent way to see the natural beauty and wonders of Meteora. Bring the extra bottle of water, pack a snack and join them, it’s worth the challenge. I was worried I wouldn’t be fit enough for it and although some parts were good cardio work, the pace made it possible; go for it! We did this tour followed by the Sunset tour a few hours later and both were excellent and not overlapping info/content. Meteora Sunset tour- This tour and Vasilis’s knowledge and passion for the subject were the best 4 hours of our time in Greece. My son and I were captivated by the topics we covered and sites we discovered and saw, thanks to Vasilis and our driver, George. I cannot recommend this tour and Visit Meteora highly enough. GO.
  • We started our day in Meteora with this hiking tour. There were only two other people in our group too. A perfect size! Our guide was Chris, who was absolutely fantastic! He did a wonderful job explaining the history and geology of the area. The hike had some steep parts, but was overall not too difficult. My 10 year old had no problems. This tour gave us a really great sense of the area, and we got to see and go to places you can’t get to from a van. Of course the sites and scenery were completely stunning. For anyone looking to visit Meteora and have a more active adventure, this was the perfect option. At the end of the tour, Chris also recommended a restaurant for lunch in downtown Kalambaka that we all agreed had delicious food! We also paired this with the sunset tour to make for a full day experience! I would highly recommend this tour!
  • Kris is a knowledgeable guide. We were able to both learn about the area, and get into the hills in a way we NEVER would have been able to do alone. The vistas were absolutely amazing. This as not an easy hike, however. Lots of steep hills. Well worth it, but you should not expect a stroll in the park.
  • Costas and Bill were amazing. We booked rock climbing with them. They brought all the equipment with them and made sure, throughout the whole climb, we were safe and helped with every small detail, including taking photos of us. It was a challenging climb and yet I've felt safe knowing Bill and Costas know exactly what to do. I'm a heavy woman and they had to help me few times. We were with 3 children ages 14,12,9. They were the happiest I've seen them. I highly recommend this company.
  • Great hike with exceptional guide whom had a great deal of knowledge about the area. Beautiful scenery with spectacular photography opportunities
  • Our family (2 adults, 3 young kids) did the hike with Jim. He was very relaxed, knowledgeable - not only about the monasteries, the scenery, the history, but also the plants and trees - and patient with our kids. We really had a fantastic morning all together. The hike turned out a little longer than we thought - Strava recorded 9km instead of 6 - but we did not notice and, most importantly, the kids didn't either! They were kept busy by Jim with many side activities. We were all educated and entertained throughout the beautiful walk! We did the sunset tour the day before and that was a miss because there is too much information overlap. So we would recommend to drive and visit the monasteries by yourselves and then do the hike the next morning.
  • Great hike, Christos was a great guide. He made the trek very enjoyable. He gave us good information about the area and the monasteries. The actual hike took us thru some beautiful natural landscapes and breathtaking views.
  • Christos was a great guide, very friendly and warm and funny. The hike was quite reasonable and the views are magnificent. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to see Meteora a bit differently and has even a moderate taste for outdoor activity!
  • Great hike! Our guide was friendly, funny, and knowledgeable. They gave a spectacular hike with wonderful stories surrounding the history of the area. I recommended this exact tour to my friends visiting the following week!
  • Excellent tour and hike! We did this a a private tour so we could visit both Great Meteoron and Varlaam monasteries. Our guide, Chris, was so awesome. He was super friendly and personable, knew tons about the monasteries and the area, and had a lot of insightful info for us. He also does the climbing tours and clearly knows his stuff! Would definitely recommend him for any hiking or climbing tours. The tour itself was a beautiful hike and the monasteries are just so cool. Absolutely loved it and 100% recommend!
  • Fantastic hike with jaw dropping scenery. Our guide was very friendly and experienced, and provided a lot of historical context to the journey. Highly recommended, definitely hike instead of taking the bus!
  • I did three half day tours with Visit Meteora, all departing from Kalambaka. THey were all great, the guides shared much knowledge and were super friendly, highly recommend it!
  • Fantastic experience. Meteora is such an extraordinary place and the hike was a wonderful way to enjoy it. We walked through woodland as well as rocky areas. During the 7 km we stopped regularly to look at the amazing views. We also stopped to look at some of the plants Our lovely guide was very knowledgable, he explained how the area was formed, we looked at the layers of rocks. We learnt about the monasteries from how they were first established, as well as more recent history, in WW2 some monasteries were destroyed. Walking allows you to enjoy so much more and get a real feel for Meteora. We also spent time in a monastery
  • This activity was fun and excited! We got to see all the main highlights of Meteora. The walk was a little challenging but nothing crazy, so everyone can do it! Our guide was fun and had lots of patience. Definitely recommend this tour.
  • It was really nice to enjoy the Meterores by walking, and get to hike until the biggest one. The group was small so we didn't have to wait a lot in order to go ahead. I recommend to do it, whether with this tour or if you have your own apps and a car you can totally do the walk by yourself.
