Stop At: Sani Pass, South Africa

The Sani Pass has been described by almost everyone as the 'Mother of all Passes'. It is a gravel pass with extremely steep bends between KwaZulu-Natal’s Underberg region and Lesotho.

It is higher and steeper and much tougher than any of its Southern African competitors and the steep switch-backs offer the most exceptional views in the country.

Built in 1950 as a bridle path, what this pass takes out of you in the challenge of adventure, it gives back in scenery.

As the altitude increases, the road becomes narrower and more treacherous. All signs of human habitation disappear and you come face to face with the vast, desolate beauty of the Drakensberg Mountains.

The road is made of gravel, and at elevations ranging from 1544m to 2876m at the summit, the Sani pass is only for the bravest and the best guides. For safety reasons, only 4×4 cars are allowed on this Pass.

  • What an amazing experience! Opted for a tour operator rather than self-drive so as to just sit back, relax and soak up the surroundings. This tour operator offers a topnotch experience. Their were 4 of us (2 couples) taking the trip and what a trip it was! It delivers everything as described on their page and more! We were collected on time at our guesthouse and dropped off there as well after a memorable day. Greg (the owner) took us up in his luxury 4X4, we were treated to homemade eats and drinks on the pass (courtesy wife Angie who should open a bakery) and other little surprises as per the shots photo in the vehicle - find that one out for yourself! Greg has a wicked sense of humor, besides his extensive knowledge of everything to do with the pass etc. and for us he was the highlight of the trip. It was such an amazing experience, and Greg such an amazing guy that my wife and I now want to do one of his extended tours into Lesotho. The private tour gave us a lot more flexibility and we felt really safe, both up and down the pass. Thanks for an absolutely awesome experience Greg, we will certainly cross paths again! Thank you Angie for the delectable treats and the flowers for the ladies. sanipassprivatetours.com are excellent value for money and highly recommended!
  • We had the most amazing experience! Greg was awesome, we had such a good time with him! I would definitely recommend this experience 100%. We had our own private vehicle and it was the same price as other tours with loads of people. Greg even brought us home made muffins and cookies which we ate in no mans land which were really tasty! Beers and pizza at the top with the best views!
  • We booked a private Sani Pass tour through Angie. It was done professionally and seamlessly. We were welcomed by David Pio, our guide and his luxury 4X4 vehicle in Himeville . It was a truly wonderful and memorable experience and although the pass is quite scary at times, David put us at ease with his skill and confidence. We descended the pass in a hail storm and the experienced David was absolutely superb, driving so carefully that we could actually revel in this exciting adventure. He also impressed with his vast knowledge of the area, friendliness, patience and hospitality(Thanks Angie for the delicious muffins). We also enjoyed learning about the Basotho culture and tasting their delicious bread. The entire experience was phenomenal..the scenery, the comfort and safety, the conversations we had with David! Thank you to the team who made this 'bucket list ' item so memorable! Highly recommended. Keep up the excellent job.
  • Absolut top-rated tour. Gregg was a very nice and relaxed guy. He gave us a warm welcome and on the comfortable trip good informations about the trip and the landscape. Highly recommanded private tour. Thank a lot!
  • Absolutely amazing from start to finish. From the moment of chatting to Angie to saying our good byes to David after spending the day going up Sani Pass and into Lesotho, it was very professionally done, and David is so knowledgeable about the area and answered all our questions we had even the crazy ones. We did the trip as a birthday surprise for my son and he loved every minute, the little gestures of cupcakes , balloons and sparkling wine added to making the day so special. The highlight was going into the village and the learning about the culture and tasting that amazing baked bread. Thank you to Angie and David for making the day ultra special. We would highly recommend Angie and her crew to take you into Lesotho, you will not be sorry!!! Thank you Angie & David.
  • Such an amazing day - David is so knowledgeable and fun to spend a day with and most importantly a fantastic driver.
  • We had a lovely time and we really enjoyed the private tour of the Sani Pass. Our Guide and Driver David was kind enough to take us to Mokhotlong (which is further up) from the Highest Pub so that we experience snow! We also appreciated the birthday treat Angie arranged for my partner - the balloons, flowers and cake were all exceptional. Both our Drivers and Guides, that is, Barry (who drove us from Durban to Underberg, and David (who took us to the Sani Pass were both exceptional drivers and guides. I would definitely do this again with Angie and their team as they are professional, knowledgeable and very good at what they do.
  • It was epic and truly awesome, Greg is amazing, very knowledgeable and humorous. Angie is extremely helpful and passionate about what she does, her personal touches adds so much to the experience, I did this tour for my 50th Birthday,it was truly memorable and awesome.God bless Angie and Greg. From ashnee, ravi and Adele
  • Greg our guide supplied a wonderful experience He know the areas, supply very tasty treats He is a very experienced driver & i can recommend the trip
  • Venturing up to Lesotho has been a dream of mine for a long time. With a lot of excitement I was picked up by a friendly face, warm car with fresh beverages, a homely bouquet of flowers and menu with a little transitional souvenir. Being a true venturer I was able to hop out and take as many pictures as I wanted, ask as many questions as I desired and had the most wonderful learning experience about the history of the beautiful mountains. My heart is full and this is an experience I will NEVER forget. Thank you for embracing my adventurous personality and spoiling me beyond measures! My soul has been revived. From a group setting to a single traveller, your best interest are taken to heart.
  • What an awesome trip. From the outset, before we even got to the Drakensberg, Angie was proactive in arranging our dates and to inform us of what to expect, what would be needed, etc. Greg is a world class tour guide. He has a wealth of knowledge regarding the area, the wildlife, the history and the people. We had some lovely bread in a local village and afterwards enjoyed a pint of beer with breathtaking views of the mountain range. Greg and Angie run a professional outfit with a highly personal touch. Would highly recommend! Deon & crew
  • We had an absolute blast!.. Our tour guide was superb and extremely informative. He took his time and made sure we were well looked after. We enjoyed our day trip. Definitely a must do!
  • We had an excellent day trip up Sani Pass with Greg. An excellent driver! The road has deteriorated so badly since the last trip up. His Prado handled everything perfectly. It was lovely having a private tour where we could be ourselves, so highly recommended! Thank you !
  • Superb 4x4 trip with an excellent friendly guide Mr. Greg (Owner) to a village at Lesotho and highest pub in Africa, with the Mrs. Angie's (Owner) cookies and muffins. We enjoyed the day.
  • From the get go, Angie was so helpful with regards to information and responding to me. It was my dad’s 70th birthday, and only 4 weeks after a complete knee replacement, and Angie and Greg went out of their way to ensure that it was the most memorable experience for our family. The comfort of the vehicle and carefully guided experience through the mountain was life changing. From the personalised baked goodies, to the in depth tour and historical adventure, the trip was the best experience on such a monumental day. Truly the best tour anyone could book!
  • We would give Greg and Angie an 11 out of 10. From the moment we made the booking we received great service. Angie was quick and efficient with her replies whenever we had queries. The day of the trip Greg collected us and made sure we had all in order to make the trip through the border without issues. He is very knowledgeable about the area and gave us enough time to see everything and take plenty photos. He went the extra mile(literally and figuratively) to drive a little further into Lesotho to see if we can get to the snow. We also had the most delicious snacks which Greg brought along - home made. We had the most memorable day thanks to Greg and Angie. They really go out of their way to make this a special experience.
  • My family and I went on a day trip up sani pass into Lesotho with Sani Lesotho private tours. It was such a beautiful, adventurous and enjoyable trip. Our guide Greg was really awesome and very informative. My 9 year old really enjoyed Greg's knowledge about the pass as well as his humour🤣🙈. Angie is a lovely lady who planned the trip for us. Really kind and sweet and always available when you need to double check stuff with her. We were given pretty much every for the trip from souvenirs to blankets to bottled water. Let's not forget Angies home baked goodies that she sends along for us to enjoy which was divine! 🤭😋😋. The tour into Lesotho was amazing, visiting the village and eating traditional bread was the best! You have to use the tours to visit the village. Visiting the highest pub was my bucket list item that I can tick off my list. We will definitely be back with sani Lesotho tours soon as we want to do a trip into Lesotho for a few days. I really can't believe the tours provided so much and all inclusive in their price which was really really cheap. I wonder how they actually make a profit. Thank you Angie and Greg for making our trip memorable and affording us the opportunity to see the beautiful sani pass/Lesotho ❤️ Thank you for the beautiful bunch of flowers Angie. You are amazing
  • Our correspondence with Angie was impressive from day one She called us and explained entire tour We informed her it was a 80th birthday celebration. She went the extra mile to order the cake for us. They made an itenary My family was blown away. We want to go back
  • Full day trip into Lesotho 19 February 2022. From the time of booking this trip with Angie, everything was organised to perfection. Angie prepare delicious eats for morning tea and picnic lunch. Greg 's knowledge of the Sani Pass national park and the Lesotho people was so interesting. Our family from England enjoyed the trip and said it was the highlight of their stay in Himeville. It was a wonderful experience and the Sani Pass is amazing. Thank you Angie and Greg. Annette, Mike, Susan and Robert.
  • This was a great experience that we thoroughly enjoyed. Angie has been so accommodating even before I could get my passport to be able to do this tour. David our well informed and professional guide added to this incredible adventure. Impressed by his knowledge of the entire area and his patience while we took pic's Thank you Angie and David
  • The whole experience was fantastic. Greg, the tour guide, was super professional: he picked us up on time from the hotel, we felt respected and valued all the way. His knowledge of the Sani Pass and Lesotho and its culture was beyond expected. The views of the mountains and the countless waterfalls were breathtaking. We stopped halfway up to take photos and to enjoy snacks and freshly baked muffins by Greg's wife, Jenny. Into Lesotho, Greg took us to one village where we learnt about the culture of Basotho people: how they use blankets, how they bake bread, how they fuel fire, etc. This was a great experience for us. I strongly recommend people to put this tour in their bucket list, but make sure you let the experienced people like Greg drive you up the mountains so you can focus on enjoying the tour to the fullest.
  • Amazing experience! Warm, pleasant and experienced tour guide who is very knowledgeable about the Lesotho culture and the history of the pass, with a very comfortable, sparkly-clean vehicle. Lots of warm and thoughtful touches to make the experience ever more pleasant. Extreme value for money and excellent service!
  • Oh! What a beautiful experience from booking arrangements with Angie to the guided tour with Greg. They make it all so easy and are so accomodating I love them
  • Our group of four people had the privilege of participating in a Sani Pass & Lesotho Private Tour with Greg. We had an absolutely wonderful experience on this occasion. Greg picked us up on time at our hotel in the morning. He was very courteous, knowledgeable, safe, and fun as a guide. The 4X4 vehicle was very clean, comfortable, and sturdy. Greg helped our little group of two Americans and two Greeks to negotiate both border crossings with ease. Our tour included a little shot of whiskey on our way up the pass (Greg did not participate in this activity for obvious reasons!), a visit to a hut with baked bread over a fire, and an extended visit to the highest pub in Africa. This experience was one the highlights of our trip to South Africa. I highly recommend Sani Pass & Lesotho Private Tours with Greg. I hope to return in the future and repeat this marvelous adventure.
